Changing the face of College Football

I was raised in a college football coaches family and then coached myself for 28 seasons 5 on Woody Hayes’s staff at Ohio State and then 15 seasons in the National Football League.

I personally am excited about the potential changes in the college football conferences. I live in SEC country about 45 minute drive from the University of Georgia and 30 minutes from Georgia Tech. My five years in Columbus, Ohio keeps me interested in the "Big Ten" and having played ball a the University of New Mexico I watch my alma mater on the Mountain West Channel.

I don't know for sure what the changes will be, but after the traditionalist get over the changes college football will be a better and more exciting product. Nebraska going into the Big Ten is going to bring much more exciting games into Lincoln.

I would like to see Texas and Oklahoma go into either the Big Ten or the SEC, it will make two fine conferences even better. I see Colorado has already committed to the PAC 12 a good move for the Colorado fans and well as West Coach college football.

What is going to happen to the schools which are not absorbed into the really big conferences? Their fans are all of a sudden will be supporting a team which for years had been an “also ran” will be competing for a league championship making their football much more exciting.

The big winners, the colleges because their game will be more interesting and generate more revenue, the TV networks who will have many more great games generating more advertizing dollars, can you imagine the ratings for a Texas Ohio State game? College fans our great game is getting even better

Let me mention one more thing and that’s the college football player, part of our educational experience is learning to compete and cooperate. Few experiences in school prepare us to perform on a daily basis at our very best than sports. You learn that part of being successful in life is to be a great teammate; your friends can absolutely count upon you. And you are a full day’s work for any of your opponents.

This is my first blog – my interests are high school, college and NFL football, Politics and Commercial Real Estate. I have always been interested in how our great country chooses our leaders at the local, state and federal level. When I left coaching I went into commercial real estate and am just as interested in how our markets create value in real estate as I am in factors in sport which allow some programs to consistently compete at a high level Plus

I am fascinated in the interesting people who I meet everyday who enrich my life and my understanding of the world.

  2. Thanks for opening up your vault of knowledge on this blog! I am a huge sports fan and remember you from the old Falcons days when Claude Humphries was terrorizing defenses down at old Fulton County Stadium! I agree on the changes in College Football and the idea of Texas or Oklahoma entering the SEC is one I hadn't heard yet but that would add another powerhouse to an already impressive football conference! I like parity in a conference and it seems it has been Florida or Alabama and everyone else in the past (tough to say as Dawgs fan myself). I think this conference merging would help allow a move toward a conference playoff and then championship which then would allow to have a true playoff to determine a real Champion rather than a computer voted champ! Let's see Big Ten (or whatever they call them), SEC, ACC PAC10, Mountain West,WAC etc play a single elimination Bowl Series with each champion of each conference. I say eliminate a game from the season (I know it helps the small schools generate revenue but Georgia State playing Alabama is not something we need to see this year) and remove a bye week which will allow more weekends to have a playoff!
It would have been cool to see Utah having a chance against Florida two years ago after handling Alabama in the Sugar Bowl or Boise State having a shot last year to prove themselves against a real challenge after beating TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. I have some more ideas brewing! They say the bowls can't go away because of the money involved but they don't have to and you have more games you have more $$ Your Thoughts?

  3. Sean,

You threw a lot a me - the BCS has in my opinion done a great job of picking the two most talented football teams for their championship games - player from the BCS championship game who make NFL roster clearly would suggest that they have been 100% right. However, when the game is played the best team does not always win it's the team which played the best - how do you explain Boise State over Oklahoma and Utah over Alabama? I have coached teams and have had many friends who had coached teams which from the beginning of spring practice they were talking National Championship and low and behold they are playing a Utah or a Boise State in a bowl game which fell far short of their expectations they had for themselves and their teammates. The Boise players and the Utah players however were playing on a National stage against probably a better team and it's was their chance to show the football world that their team was underrated. I don't think either team would have been likely to win had the National Championship been on line. If I can find it, last year I rated the college teams in order base upon the number of former players they had playing on NFL rosters The SEC had better players playing each week against better players. Based upon NFL roster Boise and TCU would have been 5th and 8th in the SEC. Texas, one of the top producers of NFL talent would take a league which is already the most talented in college football and make it even better. By the way Georgia as I recall correctly is in the top 5, which suggest to me they slightly under perform their talent level... By the way the Boise team which beat OU, was as good a coached team I have ever seen in college football.

  8. Buster (hlquist) and I both went to the University of New Mexico - Buster was a year or two ahead of me in school, but as I recall he was a NCAA champion in the Javelin ( if not he was clearly one of the very best in the country) I have been on his blog, he has some observations on the economy every investor should listen to. We have not seen each other since about 1961.

  9. Coach,
wondering what your opinion is on the big three staying in the Big 12? Is college football better off now that they are staying? I think it could have been interesting to see Texas Tech come over to SEC West but not sure what this would have done to College Football overall. I agree with you on your points above about teams on paper vs what happens in games and on a big stage especially. I am a soccer player/coach and huge fan of the World Cup. It's amazing to see some of the games unfold based on sheer will and passion for their countries rather than all around skill. To see a tiny West African third world country win because they had more heart reminds me of Boise State winning against an OU!
Anyway, just looking for your take on how things unfolded over the past couple of days relating to the BIG 12 shake up then settling.

  10. The demographics in the Big 12 State has not been good, they are losing population, while both coasts are growing - Southwest and Southeast are growing - I suspect the TV people are counting and Texas and Oklahoma would play for larger TV audiences if the moved into either the SEC or the Big Ten. Growth has slowed in the Big Ten states, but most of those states, unlike the Big 12 States are already fairly densely populated. Lubbock, Texas is an interesting town – I don’t have a feel for West Texas other than they have great football fans.

  11. Good Morning Chuck:

Having spent 21 years as a college football coach and 21 years coaching in the Nation Football League - 11 of those, years it was my privilege and honor to work with one great football coach, Chuck Clausen. Now, at age 77, I will be starting my third year coaching defense at Lake Placid High School - in Lake Placid, Florida and I continue to learn everyday from these young men. They are not as big, fast, and talented as the players in the NFL or Ohio State but they love to play football, that’s what keeps the Old Coach coming back.

One quote from your blog struck me as something to pass on these young high school players: Let me mention one more thing and that’s the college football player, part of our educational experience is learning to compete and cooperate. Few experiences in school prepare us to perform on a daily basis at our very best than sports. You learn that part of being successful in life is to be a great teammate; your friends can absolutely count upon you. And you are a full day’s work for any of your opponents.

This is also a great quote for Husbands and Wives. I have had a great team mate for 54 years.

Chuck, with your permission, I would like to pass this on to these young high school football player. You learn that part of being successful in life is to be a great teammate; your friends can absolutely count upon you.

Our Lord Jesus Christ stated in John 15: 12-13 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. God Bless, GEH
